By that time the X12 and even the Playstation Phone might very well be already released, but hey, at least SE isn’t totally abandoning the X10 now that it got its long-awaited Android 2.1 upgrade. That pinch-to-zoom update for the Xperia X10 that Japanese customers got an early lead on is now rolling out around the globe according to a new blog post from the boys and girls at Sony Ericsson. Right now the update is pegged for early 2011, but judging by the pace of previous update releases, we get the feeling it might be a bit longer.

Not to be outdone at their own game, SE today announced that limited multitouch support is being worked on for a future software update. While for the most part this is true, through firmware tweaks and a bit of emulation Android hackers made some serious progress on getting multitouch gestures recognized in the X10. InquirerSony Ericsson xperia x10 could get multi-touch and Android 2.1TMC NetWe can make out easily that number of Android phones are migrating to Android. SE had originally suggested that the functionality could possibly arrive in a future update, but later backtracked to state the X10 flat out didn’t have the hardware and software to support it. However, we should note that installing unofficial ROMs on the mobile phone is not recommended, and that the process would void the warranty, not to mention that it might also cause damage to the device, in case it it not performed as it should be.The lack of multitouch support on the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 has been a chief complaint with the device since its launch.

Those who would like to give it a try should head over to the XDA-Developers forum here to learn more on the matter and to find the necessary download links.

This all ties in nicely with the dude's claim that the X10 will see an official update to Android 2.1 in September, a window that dovetails rather nicely with Sony Ericsson's official line of 2H. Sony Ericsson announced officially that it won't release a new OS version for the Xperia X10 devices past the Android 2.1 flavor, and the new ROM is an unofficial software, and also a buggy one, it seems. In fact, not only can it do multitouch, but it will do multitouch through a software update in the second half of the year, the source goes on to say. This topic in regards to the X10 has been debated over and over.

The software comes from the guys over at XDA-Developers, and is currently only in an alpha state, which means that there are still a lot of features that are not working for the time being. One of the main features some people is multi-touch. However, in case there are some who would like to try something new on their handsets, and not remain stuck with the Android 2.1 OS platform, they should know that a custom Android 2.3 Gingerbread ROM is available for the device. Hopefully, Sony Ericsson would manage to deliver in faster than it did with the OS upgrades for the Xperia X10 and the rest of the Xperia family of Android devices. It appears as though the hardware is not capable of supporting multi-touch. Unfortunately, no specific info on when the software would be released emerged, but more on this should be announced in the near future. As more information on the X10 continues to roll in, this device is continuing its roll downhill.

The multi-touch firmware should arrive in the first quarter of the ongoing year, Sony Ericsson promised several months ago, and can be seen at work in the video embedded below. I have a Xperia X10 Mini Pro and by some ungodly reason its dual touch feature is not working. Unfortunately, no new OS flavor would be included with that software update, although users would certainly enjoy one, but the capabilities of the device would be expanded. Japanese-Swedish mobile phone maker Sony Ericsson is preparing a new software update for its high-end Xperia X10 handset, one that would enable its users enjoy the benefits of multi-touch.
